TruKid Kid Safe Sunscreen logo header

We here at Everything Summer Camp are pleased and proud to offer effective camping gear which consists of both kid-friendly and quality-made products. TruKid obviously shares this mentality since their sunscreen is a wholesome and kid-safe product made with all natural ingredients. With a natural curiosity in such a like-minded company, we asked Laura, the Sales Manager from TruKid some questions about herself and about the company. Having been to summer camps throughout her childhood and in her adolescence, Laura had much to say about the summer camp world and how TruKid sunscreen is a perfect product to pack along when you leave for your camp stay.

Not just safe for kids, but fun for them too, let us tell you about this clean concoction and its easy, “I-Can-Do” packaging for effortless application. We’ll start with a little TruKid history. The business got its start in 2007, when Jennifer—company founder and mother of six (who have all gone to summer camp)—grew weary of the chemical-filled sunscreen options on the market. She wanted better for her kids, so she developed her own natural creation that would effectively protect against harmful UV rays and smell wonderful too!

"One of the best things that happened to me was actually a ‘fail’ at the time"

Laura had started out working in sales and marketing for technology companies but working at TruKid is “more fun,” she says. “And we often make a direct impact for families with sensitive skin and eczema issues. It’s so great to get personal feedback that a child is happier and healthier because of our products.” An empathetic mother, Laura’s own daughter had trouble with sunscreens where her skin would turn raw, especially in a pool with chlorine. When Laura discovered that parabens (unnatural preservatives) and chemicals in the sunscreen were to blame, she found TruKid. “It made a huge difference for her,” Laura said.

“My kids primarily went to day sports camps,” says Laura. “Although my son did go to an overnight basketball camp at UC Berkeley. He loved sleeping in the dorms, meeting the players, and eating all the junk food!”

But as for Laura herself…

She attended a few different camps—she was part of a YMCA day camp to begin with which led to her Girl Scout overnight camp experience, as well as her weeklong Student Council camping trip in high school at Camp Miniwanca, located in Michigan.

“After morning exercises,” she told us. “Part of the ‘rite of passage’ was taking a morning dip in freezing cold Lake Michigan. I had always thought of lakes as being warm – but Lake Michigan is enormous, deep, and very cold. It was a big deal to say you had survived the challenge! I also loved sleeping in the platform tents and meeting my campmates. I stayed pen pals with several of them for many years.”

But more than just fun and friend-filled, camp is a learning experience as well. “One of the best things that happened to me was actually a ‘fail’ at the time,” Laura said. “I bit off more than I could chew, rather than getting more people involved. One of the counselors told me if I backed away a bit, others would step forward. It was really great advice, especially when working in groups.”

She also fondly recalls the talent shows at camp. “It was fun seeing what we could pull together in a very short period of time,” she reminisces.

“TruKid sunscreens are 100% mineral based—so it’s like putting on a sun shirt,” Laura says. “They work immediately, and shield the skin from the sun. Our SPF-30 Face Stick is actually my favorite TruKid product. I play tennis and it doesn’t run in my eyes, blends in easily, and doesn’t ‘ball up’ when I get sweaty. I have converted many of my teammates to it as well! It’s great for reapplying, too, without getting my hands goopy.”

All of their products are free of gluten, parabens, phthalates and any other nasty, undesirable chemicals. “We think kids are being exposed to way too many chemicals and our 100% mineral sunscreen eliminates at least one source of those,” Laura noted. With praise like this, offering a TruKid Sunscreen product at Everything Summer Camp was a no-brainer!
