Kelty Sleeping Bags and Backpacks for summer camp logo header

Keil, the East Coast Inside Sales Representative at Kelty, is a fun fella to talk to. He chatted it up with us about his time at camp, though he did not go to a traditional summer camp. Instead, he went on class retreats for a couple weeks in the seventh grade and again in the eighth. His class immersed themselves in the beautiful marshland of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan—surrounded by three of the five Great Lakes. There, Keil encountered life transformative experiences and learned handy skills as well as important life lessons.

But we’ll get back to some camp talk in just a moment. First, let’s take a look at Kelty and Keil’s role in the cog. Founded in 1952, this story begins in the garage of a carpenter named Dick Kelty. There he welded each backpack frame by hand while his wife sewed the fabric of the packs. Selling them to friends initially, business grew fast for them and within just a few years, the Kelty company had taken over Dick’s carpentry career!

"Just getting to be out there and adventuring about with your friends"

As the location of his school retreat might imply, Keil had lived in the Midwest throughout the entirety of his childhood. After his many years of education, he stayed around the general area where he found work for a number of outdoor brands. Yet, Keil was left unsatisfied with his surroundings. “Ever since I had a driver’s license, I’ve always been ready to go out and do stuff,” he explained. He followed up that the other foot always fell when work would interfere with his adventurous spirit.

Enjoying what he was doing, but not where he was, Keil packed his bags one day and followed his heart west. Eventually, he found a place he could call home in Boulder, Colorado—the town in which Kelty is based. With his zeal for adventure in the great outdoors, Keil is a perfect fit for Kelty, embodying the spirit of the company, indeed.

Living in a warmer climate with a job that doesn’t get in the way, Keil leads an exploratory, outdoorsy lifestyle—much like the lifestyle you get out of the summer camp experience.

Keil loved his camp-esque school retreat that offered him a very similar experience to that of summer camp. He faced his fear of heights when his classmates broke into teams for the high ropes course and he learned how to use a compass when they got lost on a hike. Keil learned a lot throughout his time out there, away from home.

“There’s no better teacher than experience,” he says. “Just getting to be out there and adventuring about with your friends” taught him to work as a team with others and to stop sweating all the small things. “We initially started out as idiots,” he said about himself and his friends, but went on to express his pride in his first steps toward an independent world that he took all those years ago.

Transferring the same engineering and rugged construction that they’ve employed since 1952 into all their kid-specific models and styles, Kelty makes outdoor gear that lasts. “Your trip’s only going to be as good as your gear,” Keil said. And when you shop this brand, you can trust that it’s “Built real burly. It’s going to be bulletproof,” Keil concluded. With a name like Kelty, you know you’re getting quality construction. We felt Kelty was an obvious brand to offer on our website. Enjoy shopping their great name!
